Crossrail has submitted plans for a new eight-storey residential block above the Fisher Street shaft in Holborn, central London.

Architects HOK have drawn-up the striking plans which have now been submitted to Camden Council.

The 30,000 sq ft development comprises 22 one, two and three bedroom apartments.

It will sit above the Fisher Street shaft – a single storey structure in Holborn that provides ventilation and access to the below ground Crossrail tunnels.

The Fisher Street scheme is the latest over-site development submitted for planning consent by Crossrail.

A total of 3 million square feet of office, retail and residential space is planned above new Crossrail stations and sites in London with planning consent secured for nearly 1 million sq ft of development so far.

Once the planning process for the Fisher Street site has been completed, Crossrail will begin procuring a development partner for the Fisher Street scheme.

Ian Lindsay, Crossrail’s Land and Property Director said: “Not only is Crossrail delivering world-class new transport links, it is creating high-quality new development opportunities throughout the capital.

“The Fisher Street plans offer a striking piece of architecture for a unique opportunity to deliver new residential space in a prime central London location.

“This is one of a number of commercial opportunities in the pipeline and we are continuing to seek new development partners to help us deliver a range of future schemes.”

Anthony Leslie, Head of Transportation at HOK’s London office, said: “The transportation team here at HOK were involved in some of the initial design work for the Crossrail shaft and ground level structure, so were well placed when it came to designing the over-site development and understanding the constraints of the site.

“We were able to combine the expertise of our transportation and residential teams, with our long term expertise in Building Information Modelling to deliver a unique and compelling development.”

Construction work on the Fisher Street shaft is already well underway and is expected to be completed in 2015.
