Consumer products giant Unilever has picked BAM as preferred contractor to build an advanced manufacturing centre facility at the firm’s Port Sunlight site in Birkenhead.

BAM is starting enabling works as part of a two-stage design and build contract for the £24m facility.

The 70,000 sq ft centre, which once completed will roughly be the size of a football pitch, will house scientists and engineers testing on a factory scale production new ideas for personal care and home care products.

Cameron Jones, Unilever Port Sunlight site leader, said: “From here we will have the capacity to innovate products with increased speed and efficiency, which we will turn into winning products to be enjoyed by tens of millions both here and around the world.

He added the centre would complement existing and new facilities such as the £23m materials innovation factory, which BAM is also building, at the University of Liverpool, which delivers initial R&D.

Work on both project is scheduled to complete next year.
