Sir Robert McAlpine is set to build Edinburgh’s first purpose-built music and performance venue for over 100 years.

The firm secured top billing in the bid race to secure the pre-construction services contract for the 1,000-seat auditorium concert hall to be built behind the Royal Bank of Scotland’s historic home on St Andrew Square.

The International Music & Performing Arts Charitable Trust Scotland appointed David Chipperfield Architects to design the new Dunard Centre.

It will be a major new venue for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Edinburgh International Festival.

Architect Sir David Chipperfield said: “This will be a public building that relates to Edinburgh on a civic scale by both fitting in and standing out in order to perform an important social and cultural role in a city with strong established cultural traditions.”

The client project team includes Turner and Townsend, civil engineers Whitby Wood and M&E consultant RSP.
