Stratford Island University Centre is to be built as part of a collaboration between the University of East London and Birbeck College.

Rival bidders chasing the new campus building, which is to be locate next to the Westfield shopping centre, included Laing O’Rourke and Vinci Construction.

Designed by Ken Shuttleworth’s architectural firm Make, the five storey building comprises 90,000 sq ft of education space, including areas for dance, music and IT students.

An effort has been made to reduce the amount of glass used in the building facade to improve its environmental performance and achieve a BREEAM excellent rating.

The main structure will be concrete frame with three primary stair cores.

A displacement ventilation system uses raised floors to distribute air around the building.

The campus building will also boast a green roof and photovoltaic panels on both the facade and roof.

Internally, the design includes areas of exposed fair-faced concrete, a large feature stair, and a single span bridge.

The car free site will have a fully landscaped 600 sq m learning garden.
