The University of Cambridge has started the hunt for a contractor to build a new student centre and museum.

The university has published an OJEU notice calling for a main contractor to initially take on Stage 1 of the two-stage develop and construct deal.

The notice states: “This appointment of the Main Contractor is initially for Stage 1 (the design and pre-construction phase) of a 2 stage Develop and Construct contract for the demolition, design, refurbishment and construction of a new Student Service Centre (North Range of Buildings) at the New Museums Site based on the NEC ECC standard form of contract.

“We note the intention is to novate across the Design Team to the Main Contractor at the appropriate stage. This is estimated to fall within a cost envelope of GBP 26–30 m plus VAT and consists of teaching areas, exam space, open plan and individual offices and extensive external works.”

Work is expected to start on site next Spring with a completion date two years later.

Up to six firms will be invited to bid with expressions of interest due by July 25.
