The firm took pole position on the strength of its £1bn contract win for phase 3 of the Battersea Power Station development in London where it replaces Bouygues after the French firm failed to agree a final price for the job.
The mega-deal also lifts the firm up through the rolling 12-month league rankings to third place behind Morgan Sindall and Laing O’Rourke.
According to construction information specialist Glenigan, which compiles the leagues, AECOM made its debut as a contractor ranking second in the May monthly work totals after bagging the main contract for Europe’s tallest residential tower, known as the Spire, being built in London Docklands.
The win takes AECOM’s contracting business to 24th position in the 12-month rolling league after four project wins on the back of its foray into the world of contracting.

Among the other big contract wins for the month, McAlpine also picked up a £460m commercial development in Woking for joint clients, the borough council and Surrey County Council.
Welsh civil engineering contractor Alun Griffiths bagged a £70m deal for a link road in Worcester for the county council.
Newcomer Blue Sky Building rose to third position in the May league after securing the management contract for a £150m hotel and cinema scheme on Leicester Square in London where McGee has excavated a deep basement for the project.
