Wates has been appoimnted lead construction partner for a new mental health hospital in York.

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) has appointed Wates for the new purpose-designed hospital, which will be located off the city’s Haxby Road.

The new 72 bed hospital will provide two adult, single sex wards and two older people’s wards.

Ruth Hill, TEWV’s director of operations for York & Selby, said, “We are delighted that the plans are moving forward with the appointment of a construction partner.

“Throughout the tender process Wates showed a clear understanding of what was required. The firm has proven experience of delivering healthcare projects and has a successful track record of delivering a variety of schemes within the region.

“Importantly we also wanted to ensure that there was a key focus on the community.

“There has been a commitment to utilise local supply chains where possible, maximise the opportunities for local people and to develop relationships with social enterprises, colleges, universities and schools throughout the project.”

Paul Dodsworth, Business Unit Director, Wates Construction Yorkshire and North East, added: “We feel very privileged to be awarded the opportunity to work on such an important project, one that will positively impact the health and wellbeing of the people of York.

“This appointment continues our presence in the city and is further testament to our skills, experience and status as a trusted construction partner.

“We have a strong site team and we’ll be using our role to generate local economic spend with suppliers and subcontractors while also offering tangible training and employment opportunities for local people.”

Work will now continue to finalise plans for the new hospital, which is expected to be completed in 2019.

This includes submitting a formal planning application and purchasing the land. The full business case is expected to be signed off by the Trust’s Board of Directors in the New Year.
