Willmott Dixon and Mears, which both hold housing maintenance contracts with Birmingham council, are planning job cuts in a move to restructure of the workforce to deliver better services.
UCATT claims that Willmott Dixon intends to make 151 staff redundant, while the figure for Mears is 51. The job losses are on top of 50 workers recently made redundant from capital projects.
A spokesman for Willmott Dixon said: “We have been in consultations with UCATT for some time about finding alternative roles and jobs for workers.
“We went through the same process on our previous Birmingham North contract to reduce duplication and develop a more multi-skilled workforce. This helped us to achieve 94.5% customer satisfaction in the area.”
Steve Murphy, regional secretary for UCATT Midlands region, said: “The extent of the proposed job losses is entirely unacceptable.”
He claimed that the cuts would extend repair times and make it hard for staff to maintain the existing level of service.
