Bosses at Dorval called in administrators from PFK after it became clear that the firm was no longer in a position to continue trading.
Work has stopped on six projects, including a bakery, two homes, an alms house and work at Newport Free Grammar School in Saffron Walden and Alton Park Primary School in Clacton-on-Sea.
PFK’s David Merrygold told the Maldon Standard: “Sadly it’s a reflection of the general economic downturn in the construction industry.
“Initially we had hoped to be able to allow a few of the projects to be completed and then to sell the company, but it quickly became apparent that it wouldn’t be possible and so liquidation became the only option.”
The assets of the company will now be auctioned to help refund its creditors.
