Norwich council has issued a plea to motorists to respect the road closure signs while May Gurney and Mott McDonald complete the £250,000 contract for resurfacing and reconstruction on the A1067.
A council statement said: “Traffic on the A1067 Norwich to Fakenham road is being urged to heed the road closure signs after large vehicles including supermarket delivery lorries were being forced to turn round after ignoring repeated warnings of the road works and closure ahead.”
Lorry drivers have also been trying to ignore the official detour and use short-cuts on local roads which are too small for their vehicles.
The statement added: “Some articulated HGVs have been reported trying to make their way around the closure on unsuitable roads, and others have been turning around in private entrances and gateways, damaging verges and surfaces.”
The contract is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.
