The airport operator expects to spend around £40m over the next two years completely rebuilding the runway system and fitting new ground lighting.
More than 70,000 tonnes of blacktop needs to be laid to resurface the main runway and linking taxiways, in what will prove a hugely complex project management exercise.
Contractors have until 9 December to complete PQQS for the pavement work, which can be obtained from www.airportsmart.com.
Last month funding was secured for the £53m project to expand Gatwick Airport’s railway station.
Through the scheme being jointly funded by Gatwick Airport and Network Rail, the station will get a new platform to ease the ‘bottleneck’ for the Brighton services.
Other improvements include new escalators, a refurbished concourse area and new track and signals to provide passengers with more reliable and punctual journeys.
Construction work is due to start next autumn and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
The £1bn upgrade will be rolled out over the next two years, in order to deliver modern facilities finally ridding the airport of its state-owned Seventies heritage.
This project will also see the North Terminal undergo a multimillion-pound extension and the check-in area will see a rise in the number of self-service facilities available.
