The scheme’s partners, Tesco, Peak Valley Housing Association, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council and developer CTP can now begin working on the project, which will bring 450 jobs to the area.
The plans had been opposed by some local residents, with more than 2,000 signing a petition sent to Pickles.
The new superstore will be built on derelict land off Stockport Road and Ashworth Lane, known locally as the ‘Mottram Roundabout’ site.
The new development will comprise a Tesco Extra and a new building base for the local library service, Hattersley Neighbourhood Partnership, the police and Peak Valley Housing Association offices.
Work on the new development is anticipated to start in April 2011
