Betting Spy: Man City to stun United at 4/1

Last week’s Premiership goal frenzy must have had Alan Hansen waking-up in a cold sweat about the state of modern defending.

Bizarre scorelines were clocking-up across the country leaving Sky bosses beaming over the “greatest league in the world”.

But one thing that’s obvious to everyone bar biased commentators is that the league leaders are top of the pile by default rather than great performances.

Man Utd occupy top spot. But even the most ardent fan would have to admit they have struggled to rise above average for most of the season.

Wayne Rooney still looks like someone’s swopped him with an even angrier, less talented, twin brother.

How they survived unbeaten until last week’s defeat by Wolves says more about the rest of the league than their own quality.

Arsenal still flatter to deceive as the Newcastle 4-4 debacle amply demonstrated. The strolling Londoners took their foot of the gas and got their come uppance.

While Wenger is in charge the Gunners will never be ruthless enough to win anything of note.

And what of Chelsea? You pay £50m for a striker who unbalances the side and plays just as badly as he did in a Liverpool shirt.

I’m in the mood to take a few of these sides on this week and let’s start with the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford where Man City are priced up at a very tempting 15/4 to win.

A shade under 4/1 is enough for me to back the richest team in town to sneak a close-fought win over their red rivals.

The other bet of the week comes at the Emirates in the Champions League on Wednesday when I can see Arsenal and Barcelona enjoying a goalfest.

Barcelona are odds on to win and that’s the likely outcome. But 7/4 about more than 3.5 goals looks a more attractive punt.

Messi and co are sure to give the Gunner’s keeper a busy night but they Spaniards are susceptible to pace at the back and Theo Walcott could supply a few chances from the right.

It has all the makings of another great European night as two great passing sides go head-to-head. Unfortunately for Arsenal, Barcelona are better at it but let’s back goals and cheer on both sets of forwards.
