UK Distributors of Ifex fire fighting equipment believe their range of portable water cannons would be perfect in the fight against looting mobs.
The high pressure fire-fighting gear can be carried by operators in a backpack which shoots water and compressed air at 400km per hour.
Civil engineering contractors use the technology to fight fires in confined spaces like tunnels.
The equipment is also currently used to quell disturbances in prisons.
Ifex spokesman Peter McCloskey said: “The recent riots have led to a lot of talk about using water cannons and we are just letting people know that the technology is available.
“These backpacks look a bit like those on Ghostbusters.
“They have the double advantage of putting out fires during a disturbance if the fire brigade are delayed and you can also use them as a cannon to stop rioters in their tracks because the water comes out at great pressure.”
