Once the plans have been checked by officers they will be scrutinised by the city council’s Planning and Environmental Protection Committee in the next couple of months.
If approved, Kier intends to start work on site in spring next year with the new Nene Park Academy opening in September 2013.
Cabinet member for education, skills and university, Cllr John Holdich, who formally accepted the plans from Kier, said: “This is an exciting milestone for everyone connected with Nene Park Academy and is a further step towards the new buildings which are so desperately needed.
“We have already consulted with parents and local residents about the plans and further consultation will continue throughout the development programme.”
The plans include the remodelling of a quarried area into a grassed amphitheatre feature at the front of the new academy.
The new building will contain accommodation for the full range of the curriculum and will reflect the vision and ethos of Nene Park Academy sponsor Cambridge Meridian Trust.
