Severfield-Rowen margins tumble for 20% market share

Steelwork contractor Severfield-Rowen has warned  demand will remain flat for several years as it posted falls in pre-tax profits and margins in the first half.

But the firm said there would also be some opportunities in London office building and the power and industrial distribution sectors.

In the half year to June, underlying pre-tax profits plummeted 58% to £3.4m as net margins tumbled from 6.5% to 2.8%.

But Britain’s biggest steelwork specialist managed to retain its 20% dominant market share with turnover at £122m, down just 3.5% on the previous year.

The UK order book is up against last year at £249m after securing the big Cheesegrater office contract in London, alongside other wins at Chichester Place in the capital and jobs at Sellafield and BMW’s Cowley plant.

Tom Haughey, chief executive officer, said: “The company has been consistently cautious about the timing and extent of recovery in the UK market, an approach which has been justified.

“The company is forward planning on the basis that demand will remain subdued for the next few years, showing only marginal growth for the market as a whole but with further opportunity in the London commercial, power and industrial/distribution sectors.”

Further afield  the firm’s joint venture business in India performed well in the first 12 months of operation.

JSW Severfield Structures has now built up a very strong order book of £41m and is progressively increasing operational outputs to target levels, which will be achieved in the coming months, said Haughey.
