The biggest firm, Wigan-based Ayrefield Plant Limited, is understood to have employed around 40 staff and turned over around £3m a year.
It specialised in drainage, hard and soft landscaping, reinforced and un-reinforced structures and worked for Carillion, Laing O’Rouke, John Sisk and Eric Wright in recent years.
Meanwhile on the south coast, Portsmouth firm Groundpoint has also been placed in administration.
Two years ago the firm spread its wings to beat the downturn in work from the banking crisis to chase work within the M25.
Initially the strategy paid off with it landing million-pound contacts in the London Boroughs of Battersea and Islington.
