Autumn statement at a glance
- National Infrastructure Plan contains more than 500 projects to be built over the next decade covering roads, rail and airports
- £5bn on new road and rail projects released across the regions:
- A new rail link between Oxford, Bedford and Milton Keynes will create 12,000 jobs
- The electrification of the northern TransPennine route
- Accelerate upgrade of Tyne & Wear Metro
- Go-ahead for East West link between Oxford and Bedford
- Extension of the Northern Line of London Underground to Battersea
- Bristol link road and the A380 bypass will go ahead
- Immediate improvements to the A14
- Start working on a new crossing of the Lower Thames
- the A45, the A43, the A453 link, the Kettering Bypass, and the M1 and M6 will all be improved
- £1bn to tackle areas of congestion and improve the national road network
- Extra £1.2bn on school, half to local authorities, the other £600m to fund 100 extra free schools
- £170m of extra funding to allow more local transport projects to go ahead
- Targeting up to £20bn of private infrastructure through a memorandum of understanding with UK pension funds and establishing the Infrastructure Investors Forum with the Association of British Insurers
- New time limits on planning applications
- Borrowing is £112bn higher over the next 4 years than Chancellor’s previous forecasts, but debt interest payments are £22 billion less than expected.
- The Office for Budget Responsibility says UK will avoid recession but GDP growth down to 0.9% for this year and 0.7% next year.
- Public sector pay increases capped at 1%
- National loan guarantee scheme. 1% cut in borrowing costs for small medium sized business.
- Mortagage indemnity scheme to help 100,000 families.
- Reinvigorate right to buy, with discounts up to 50%. Receipts going to build new homes
- An extra £1bn is being allocated to the Regional Growth fund in England
