Building owner The National Exhibition Centre has now started the search for a contractor to carry out the complex task of improving facilities while the building continues to open its doors as a major entertainment venue.
The central bowl is not included in the scope of the two-stage design and build refurbishment job, which was formally put out to tender today.
NEC Group Arenas managing director Phil Mead said: “The aim of the redevelopment programme is to make the NIA more accessible, both visually and physically, taking advantage of its key canal-side location.”
The plan to extensively upgrade facilities with new public concourse levels to increase the food and drink facilities available pre, during and post show. The works will also enhance the area around the arena.
Considerable M&E enabling works will be required throughout the various phasing to ensure that existing services are maintained and integrated with new. As a result NEC is looking for bidders with integrated M&E teams or M&E teams on board.
Architects Broadway Malyan are leading the professional client team which includes quantity surveyors from Turner and Townsend and structural experts from Rodgers Leask.
