West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to an apartment block in Paradise Street, Birmingham shortly before 12.30pm.
A spokesman said: “On arrival at the scene crews found a man in his twenties had fallen 10 – 15 feet onto a metal grid in an access shaft next to the main lift.
“The man was treated at the scene for a serious head injury together with arm, pelvic and chest pains.
“The patient was immobilised with the use of a neck collar and spinal board and given pain relief before being conveyed by land ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”
