The Highways Agency has put Area 4 and Area 12 asset support contracts out to market.

Together the jobs are estimated to be worth anywhere between £700m and £825m over five years, with the added option of extending both deals for three years.

The new highways maintenance arrangements covering the south east and Yorkshire and Lincolnshire areas will come into force from 30 March next year.

The successful contractor will provide integrated network management, maintenance, incident management and contingency planning on trunk roads and motorways in the area.

Works include routine and cyclic road and bridges maintenance works, winter maintenance and delivery of road, structures and technology schemes worth £4m-£8m.

Contractors are also being warned that any one firm will only be allowed to win a maximum of four of the total 14 ASC contracts  as the agency strives to maintain competition in the road sector.

The agency also said it plans to assess bids weighting 60% on its supplier StART Assessment, 35% on past performance data and a 5% weighting for added value.
