Local contractors are set for a work windfall after Skills Minister Matthew Hancock handed out an extra £214m for 47 further education colleges across the country.

Government will provide £77m capital funding which is being matched with £137m from colleges.

Colleges targeted are deemed to be in greatest need of help or those offering practical skills training to help growth in the economy.

The Government stressed the new funding was extra to the £110m of the Enhanced Renewal Grant for 56 colleges announced in November.

Both funding packages will lever smaller scale new build and refurbishment projects worth in excess of £625m.

It will be allocated through the Skills Funding Agency enabling projects ranging from a construction training centre to an automotive technology hub.
