Morgan Sindall planned to install the 290-tonne prefabricated Golden Bridge over night to minimise traffic disruption.
The 84m pedestrian and cycleway bridge was transported as a whole structure from the Inverness Campus site and inched along the A9 on Saturday night. It was then being jacked-up into position.
But as the bridge was being raised into place wheel axles on one of the heavy jacks appeared to buckle leaving the bridge suspended in the air.
The north and southbound slip roads remained closed till the early hours of Monday morning when Morgan Sindall successfully installed the bridge at the second attempt.
The steel bridge over the busy trunk route will connect the Inverness College Campus on the eastern edge of the city with the Raigmore Estate, near to houses on Ashton Road.
