Betting Spy: Di Canio to spur Sunderland derby win

The real sporting action this weekend is taking place in Augusta where the Masters should serve up a cracking four days of golf.

But the action is already underway so we’ll have to look elsewhere for a punt this weekend.

And what could provide more of a contrast with Georgia’s genteel tournament than a fiery football derby in the North East?

Newcastle host Sunderland on Sunday in what could be a defining game in the relegation battle.

The best bet of the day is that this match won’t be held up by a minute’s silence for Margaret Thatcher.

But Sunderland at 3/1 aren’t far behind as Paolo di Canio bids to drag the Black Cats out of trouble.

Now Paolo has been making waves off the pitch with his rather disturbing political leanings.

But back between the white lines Sunderland looked a bit sharper up front against Chelsea last week and I’ve got a feeling they could be visiting Newcastle at a good time.

Alan Pardew’s men have had a tough few weeks of fixtures and have already been turned over at home by Wigan, Reading and Swansea this year.

Sunderland really need a win to turn the tide of a disastrous run and they look a big price at threes.

Another side in danger who seem on the up are Aston Villa who seem to have goals in them despite a far from watertight back line.

They host a Fulham side who seem to be easing up as the end of the season approaches and the Villans look worth a go at 13/10.

In fact let’s go for broke and pair Sunderland and Villa in a win double which pays a shade over 8/1.
