Five contractors have gained the highest ranking in the annual benchmark for corporate responsibility.

Run by Business in the Community for over a decade, the CR Index is the UK’s leading and most in-depth voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility.

This year a new premier league known as the The Platinum Big Tick was introduced to recognise firms where corporate responsibility is embedded throughout the organisation.

Carillion, Costain, Kier, Mitie and Wates have all made the top ranking based on ‘stretch questions’ on topics such as their long-term planning and the unique contribution their business can make to create transformational change and a sustainable economy.

Kier Group chief executive Paul Sheffield said: “We are delighted to have achieved Platinum Big Tick status. We do not underestimate the value that CR brings to Kier and shall continue in our bid to further improve, steer change and encourage others to do likewise.”

Mitie chief executive Ruby McGregor-Smith, said: “We believe that operating a responsible, sustainable business is fundamental to our long-term success.”
