Mansell’s main London office in Islington is closing – and the firm has won the contract to convert its former home into a free school.

Mansell staff will be moving out of the City Road site over the next few weeks as parent company Balfour Beatty’s streamlining continues in the wake of last year’s restructuring announcement.

The Mansell team is moving into Balfour’s Blackfriars and Victoria offices.

The design and build project at City Road involves the refurbishment and remodelling of Mansell’s former office into a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy for the Department for Education.

Work will involve the complete strip out and refurbishment of the existing office to provide a high quality teaching environment for 432 pupils.

Mansell has developed an innovative strategy to accommodate an initial 2013 intake of 216 pupils.

Temporary accommodation will be created by fitting out the building between July and September 2013.

The permanent works will then proceed on a phased basis leading up to completion in summer 2014.

Liam Duffy, Managing Director for Balfour Beatty’s refurbishment delivery unit said: “The programme and logistics will be challenging but we won the job because we were able to demonstrate our proven track record on schemes of a similar nature.

“It’s great to be involved in transforming one of our former offices into something that will support young people in realising their potential.”

Works will include structural adaptations and completely new services including mechanical ventilation, envelope improvements and finishes to create hall space, a business first area, workshops, classrooms and science laboratories.

A kitchen and dining area, flexible learning resource and new toilet core will also be provided.
