Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is launching a consultation exercise into plans to charge non-compliant lorries, tipper trucks and cement mixers.
Johnson, said: “I have long been worried that a large number of cyclist deaths involve a relatively small number of problem lorries which are not fitted with safety equipment.”
Of the nine cyclist deaths involving HGVs in 2011, seven involved construction lorries.
The proposed London Safer Lorry Charge is partly modelled on the successful London Low Emission Zone, which charges up to £200 a day for commercial vehicles that do not meet tough emission standards.
Demolition specialist Keltbray’s Transport Manager Terry Good, said: “Safety is paramount, as far too many cyclists are killed on Britain’s roads.
“Keltbray has a strong record of supporting road safety initiatives and therefore fully back the proposal about making side bars mandatory for all large good vehicles.
“In addition to sidebars, Keltbray was one of the first companies to fit side proximity sensor cycle technology systems to the haulage fleet back in 2008, while this year, our entire 228 strong fleet was fitted with a CCTV system, which records and stores data and provides the driver with live feeds from different angles onto a split screen which is mounted in the cab.
“This enhances the visibility for drivers and improves safety for other road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians.”
