The University has started tendering to appoint the professional team, including architect, structural and civil engineers for the 400,000 sq ft project.
Once appointed they will work up plans to redevelop the site with a landmark building that will act as a hub for the University’s sprawling campus in the city.
The project is being budgeted to cost around £50m to build.
Under present plans the 250,000 sq ft five-storey Royal Mail building will be demolished to make way for new teaching and office space.
