The major makeover of St Fagans National History Museum in Cardiff will involve new-build and refurbishment work.
A new ’Gweithdy’ or workshop building will rise up in the heart of the site and house a gallery covering the story of Wales from 230,000BC – the date of the earliest Neanderthal teeth found in the country – to the present, looking at the ways in which people have lived.
This element is budgeted to cost around £16m with the revamp work making up the rest of the budget.
The existing main building will be transformed by roofing the present courtyard to create a covered atrium with a new entrance.
Work on the existing Main Building and Gweithdy will start this month and last for two and three years respectively.
Work on the historic buildings and landscape will continue throughout the project, finishing in 2018 in time for the Museum’s seventieth anniversary.
