The Bishop Gate development will see five tower blocks built, one rising up to 17 storeys for Coventry University. The design and build deal will be worth around £38m and be for 750 of 1,200 student rooms planned for the site.

Barberry Developments and Coventry University, which jointly plan to transform the former Royal Mail sorting office site into student accommodation have gained planning consent.

Demolition contractor DSM has cleared the site ready for construction to begin once the planning application is approved.

Barberry Developments’ director Henry Bellfield said: “We hope the application for detailed planning consent will be successfully determined before Easter and we can begin construction later this year. Our target is to hand over the first rooms for the September 2018 intake of students.”

Barberry has appointed architects Stride Treglown, with student accommodation divisional director Kieran Lilley leading the project. Arcadis will act as cost consultants, with Hoare Lea as M&E engineers and Nolan Associates as Civil & Structural engineers.
