Spanish recycling and waste management specialist FCC Environment (UK), which was awarded the contract to design, build, finance and operate facilities, has compeleted the financing package after signing a deal with the Green Investment Bank.
The deal allows EPC contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova to start construction immediately on the 14.1 MW waste recycling and combined heat and power plant.
The Edinburgh and Midlothian project marks a further milestone for HZI, as it is the company’s first project in Scotland, and the tenth in the UK.
“HZI not only has a track record as a supplier of first-class EfW technology, it has also reliably delivered to us, on schedule, and within budget,” said Paul Taylor, chief executive officer at FCC.”
The project is expected to create up to 350 jobs during construction with completion expected in spring 2019. When the plant becomes operational and will be capable of treating around 155,000 tonnes of waste a year, supplying electricity up to some 32,000 households.
The delivered waste will be mechanically pre-treated in order to separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recycling.
A dry flue gas treatment system will be used at the plant, which increases the recovery of valuable thermal energy for electricity production, while at the same time cuts water consumption of the plant.
