The redevelopment of the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, better known as Cefas, will see some existing buildings, including a former hotel, demolished.
Refurbishment work is planned to start in November on an existing building at the site with work due to start on the new office building in January 2018, once final partnership funding is in place.
Fisheries Minister, George Eustice said: “Cefas has always been at the forefront of marine research and innovation, and I’m pleased this new centre is one step closer to reality.
“Once complete it will help bolster our research and understanding of sea life – solidifying our position as a world leader in marine science and a champion of sustainable fishing.”
The new building will feature green roofs with integrated PV panels. The Bauder BioSOLAR system to be used is an integrated mounting solution for photovoltaic renewable energy with a green roof where the substrate and vegetation provide the panel anchors removing the need for penetrating the waterproofing.
