Bids called for £680m London waste power plant

North London Waste Authority has finally invited tenders to design and build a major energy from waste facility at Edmonton EcoPark in North London.

The Government granted development consent in 2017 for the new energy recovery plant to replace a 45-year-old incinerator.

Under the contract estimated at £680m, the successful contractor will assume all risk for design, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, including testing, and operator training before handover.

Around 90 apprentices are also to be required to be on the construction project, once work gets underway in May 2022.

The replacement facility would use today’s leading technology when controlling emissions, making the facility capable of achieving levels of 60% below the current permissible limits for nitrogen oxides.

The existing plant will be decommissioned and demolished once the new facility is up and running by 2028.

It will have the capacity to treat up to 700,000 tonnes of waste a year from households in the seven surrounding boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.

Buckingham Group Contracting and Galldris are delivering site preparation and infrastructure works for the project.

Interested firms have until 11 September to submit prequalification documents with around three firms them being invited to bid in early November.
