Plans have surfaced to build a 250m long beach and surf resort with hotel at the Merseyside coastal town of Southport.

The new complex would be created near to the site of the former open-air swimming baths.

Sefton Council has entered into an exclusivity agreement with developer Go Surf to create the all-year-round attraction with a world-class surf wave pool at its heart.

The £40m seafront project will also include water-based wellness and spa, 4-star accommodation and indoor leisure facilities.

Using the next generation of surf pool technology Southport Cove will make waves reaching over 2 m for accomplished surfers, to just 0.5m for those who prefer ‘fun’ waves.

Sefton Council will seek funding as part of Southport’s Town Deal bid for part of the government’s £3.6bn Towns Fund.

The founders of Go Surf said: “We’re taking a world-class surf pool and building a resort around it that’s far more than just a place for catching waves, something that all visitors and members can enjoy on any given day of the year.”
