Infrastructure specialist Magdalene has been awarded a £150m framework to deliver telecommunications services for electricity network operator SP Energy Networks.

Magdalene – part of M Group Services – will manage and upgrade telecom network operations across Central and Southern Scotland, as well as Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and North Shropshire.

Magdalene will also deliver SP Energy Networks’ Operational Telecommunications capital build program which encompasses design, fibre and cabling infrastructure renewal works and communications network implementation.

Work will start in February 2021 and Magdalene will orchestrate delivery for the contract from the SP Energy Networks Network Operations Centre near Glasgow taking on former Vodafone staff.

SP Energy Networks Director of Processes and Technology, Colin Taylor, said: “Operational telecommunications is fundamental to effective and efficient operation of our electricity network and, increasingly, will be key to enabling net zero and a green recovery.

“I look forward to working with Magdalene to deliver a better future, quicker for all our customers.”

Magdalene Managing Director Mark Turner added: “This contract award underpins our future growth and demonstrates further advancement of our strategy in the utilities sector.

“This is also a significant contract win for the wider M Group Services strategy because, whilst the delivery will be led by Magdalene, it will also draw upon the operational capability of the wider Telecom Division and be further supported by the Group’s experience and expertise within the UK utility sector.”

M Group recently struck a deal with Skanska to buy its its infrastructure services business for £50m.
