Emergency services were called to developer Salboy’s Viadux Tower project in Albert Street early on Tuesday morning.

The report prompted a full emergency response although it was later confirmed by Salboy that there was no explosion and the incident had been caused by a blocked concrete pipe.

Salboy’s construction partner Domis Construction is working on the £300m scheme which will rise to 42-storeys when finished next year.

Rochdale contractor Mayo Civil Engineering is the RC frame contractor on the project.

It is understood construction crews were pumping concrete for flooring on one of the tower’s upper floors when the worker was injured.

He was hospitalised but released later that day having not suffered serious injuries.

A spokesman for Salboy said: “Our preliminary investigation has now revealed that the incident occurred while attempting to unblock a pipe connected to a concrete pump, we can confirm that there was no explosion.

“We can now confirm that the injured person was released from the hospital on the same day, sustaining minor impact injury to their calf.

He added: “We would also confirm the structural integrity of the building is unaffected and the build programme remains unchanged.

“Works on site has now fully recommenced.”

Salboy and the construction company said a full investigation has been opened.
