Student rooms developer Unite is pressing ahead with two major schemes amid strong university demand.

In a trading update this morning the developer revealed it has obtained resolution to grant planning for its £124m Central Quay development in Glasgow.

With full planning consent expected for the 934-bed scheme in the coming months, Unite said it aimed to proceed to open for the 2027/28 academic year.

Also its joint venture with Newcastle University has received consent to level the existing Castle Leazes student buildings in the city to make way for a major new scheme.

Contractor Bowmer & Kirkland will start in the coming weeks to demolish 17 outdated blocks on the site. Unite has submitted a planning application to build 2,000 new beds in their place.

Joe Lister, Unite Students chief executive officer, said Unite was making progress with the delivery of a record development pipeline.

He added the firm was tracking further opportunities for development, university partnerships and acquisitions in London and strong regional markets and expected to unveil further schemes before the end of the year.

“Student demand remains strong from both domestic and international students, reflecting the continued appeal of UK Higher Education, our fixed-priced, all-inclusive offer and the growing shortage of high-quality student homes.

“Together with our alignment to the UK’s strongest universities, this supports stronger rental growth for the 2024/25 academic year and underpins growth in our property valuations,” he said.
