A man has been arrested after a 61-year-old pedestrian was hit by a truck and later died on a construction site in Wigan.

The accident happened last week during site preparation works for a new multi-storey car park for Wigan Infirmary.

Greater Manchester Police told the BBC the man died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services and a joint investigation involving police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been launched.

A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

The HSE said: “We are aware of the incident and are working with police.”
