Spencer Bridge Engineering has cemented its reputation north of the border after bagging a trio of bridge upgrade jobs on some of Scotland’s most iconic crossings.

The Yorkshire-based specialist has secured work on the Kessock, Forth Road and Tay Road bridges as part of a major programme of upgrades stretching into 2026.

At the Kessock Bridge near Inverness, Spencer will return to carry out strengthening, steelwork modifications and repainting inside the four towers. The upgrades will also install a new rescue system to improve emergency access for workers operating within the pylons.

The firm will work alongside BEAR Scotland and designer Jacobs on the logistically challenging scheme.

Further south, Spencer has also landed a complex job to replace original 1960s thrust bearings on the Forth Road Bridge. The work forms part of the bridge’s Critical Element Programme and involves extensive temporary works, including new access systems and steel strengthening.

Enabling works kick off next year with bearing replacement due in 2026.

On the Tay Road Bridge, the firm will replace two ageing underdeck gantries that have been in place since the 1980s. Spencer’s in-house team will deliver full design and installation on the £5m project, including new propulsion tech with a web traction drive system.

Alan Hutchinson, Bridge Manager at Tay Road Bridge Joint Board, said: “These new state-of-the-art under bridge inspection gantries will play a crucial role in helping us keep the bridge safe for all of our 26,000 daily users far into the future.”
