Acciona heads May contracts league with water job

Spanish contracting giant Acciona scooped the highest value of orders in May with a single Thames Water job to deliver a £400m waterworks upgrade in North London.

The Coppermills works upgrade in the Lea Valley covers a huge package of civils and MEICA works to boost supply resilience in the capital.

According to data compiled by Barbour ABI, the pickings were slim in May with the value of projects secured by the leading 50 contractors plunging by 40% to around £2.3bn.

The tables for most successful work-winning firms over the last 12 months saw Mace replace Sir Robert McAlpine at the top after the contractor picked up a £125m order from the Natural History Museum to build its new collections, research and digitisation centre in Shinfield at Thames Valley Science Park.

New building will house 28 million specimens, around a third of the Museum’s vast collection

Private contractor Bowmer + Kirkland jumped to third place in the annualised league for the first time after securing seven projects with an estimated value of £225m.

The haul included a £90m office job at the Mayfield scheme in Manchester and a £45m hotel project at the station quarter scheme in Telford towen centre.

B+K starts this summer on the 233,000 sq ft building to be known as The Republic.
