A preliminary market engagement notice has been published as the EA finalises procurement strategy and contract documents ahead of a formal tender launch expected in September.
The complex job will involve works across a tight, heritage-sensitive townscape to protect residents, businesses and critical infrastructure from repeated flood risk.
The scheme is designed to raise the standard of protection from multiple flood sources. Due to the steep valley topography and rapid onset of flooding, interventions will be technically challenging and involve river regulation and flood control works.
The four-and-a-half-year job is expected to start in September 2026 and run until summer 2030, with a potential six-month extension.
Interested firms have until 29 August 2025 to respond to the early engagement exercise, which covers procurement options, tendering approaches and potential contract terms.
