Major Sizewell concrete win for local supplier

Sizewell C has awarded a major concrete contract to a Suffolk-based firm with a facility in neighbouring Leiston.

Eastern Concrete Ltd will provide over 120,000m3 of quality approved concrete as part of early-stage construction work over the next two years.

The deal is part of Sizewell C’s growing regional investment which has already seen £330m awarded to 77 suppliers across the East of England.

Tom Baker, Managing Director, Eastern Concrete, said: “This is the biggest contract I’ve ever secured and the highlight of my career. I always wanted to be involved with the construction of Sizewell C, and I’m thrilled we’re able to expand our local workforce. By paying local salaries, we’re helping drive a circular economy that benefits other businesses in the area. This is fantastic news for East Suffolk.

“Sizewell have come good on their commitment. They said they would support local businesses and that’s exactly what they’ve done.”

Deliveries will be made from Eastern Concrete’s dedicated batching plant in Leiston, established in 2023 on Eastlands Industrial Estate, and eventually from an additional plant located on the construction site.

The materials will support non-nuclear construction activities such as site roads, park and ride facilities, and all the temporary buildings required for the project.

Based in Stowmarket, Eastern Concrete previously supplied materials for the dry fuel store at Sizewell B in 2014.

Damian Leydon, Site Delivery Director, Sizewell C, added: “It’s fantastic to see this contract creating jobs locally while drawing on the expertise of a regional supplier. We’ve pledged to invest £4.4 billion in the East of England, and this partnership clearly demonstrates that commitment.”

Sizewell C is a 3.2GW low-carbon nuclear power station being constructed on the Suffolk coast. Once operational, it will provide electricity for up to six million homes over at least 60 years.

Preliminary construction work began in January 2024 and last month, the Government confirmed the project would go ahead and announced further investment of £14.2bn.
