Before that he served as the chief executive of Costain until 2005, chief executive of consultant Hyder and held senior roles at John Laing Construction, Alfred McAlpine and Tarmac Construction.
Philip Aiken, Balfour chairman, said: “Stuart Doughty’s strong track record and experience at Laing, Tarmac, McAlpine and Costain will be particularly valuable to Balfour Beatty as we move to restore the business to profitable performance.”
He is a chartered engineer and a fellow of both the Institutions of Civil and Highway Engineers.
His expertise was recognised in 2005, when he was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for services to international trade and investment.
