Betting Spy: Chelsea all set for a title repeat

Surely it can’t be the start of a new football season already?

Well, not quite. But the whole idea of this preview lark is getting in early.

The big question is – who will win the Premier League? And the simple answer is Chelsea.

It may be a bit boring and predictable to tip the favourites and current holders.

But I’ll take boring winners over exciting losers at the bookies window every day of the week.

You build great teams from the back. And the Chelsea back five is simply in a different league to their nearest rivals.

The Blues won the league by eight points last season and I’ve seen nothing since which suggests they can’t do it all over again this time round.

Jose Mourinho has been pretty quiet in the transfer market but it looks like the pursuit of John Stones as a long term replacement for John Terry is serious.

Man United have been the biggest spenders so far and their midfield should be ramped-up a notch by the arrival of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

But it was the same story last year with Angel di Maria supposed to spark a resurgence which ended in a fourth place finish.

Man City are also buying but the wobbles in that back line might cost even more to fix.

Arsenal and Arsene Wenger are playing their usual cautious game in the transfer window.

They are a great team to watch but we all know they come up short when it really matters.

And as for Liverpool? Well, for all the gloating about getting £49m for Raheem Sterling it rams it home what really competing costs when Christian Benteke arrives for £32.5m.

This time last year the summer transfer window saw some huge signings.

But how well do you think this little lot worked out? – Angel di Maria (£59.7m), Eliaquim Mangala (£32m), Luke Shaw (£27m), Dejan Lovren (£20m).

Chelsea have a settled side and in Eden Hazard a player who is only going to get better and better.

Keep Costa fit and if Falcao rediscovers some of his previous magic then the 13/8 currently dangled by Paddy Power on Chelsea could seem a very wise investment come next May.
