Balfour Beatty, Bechtel and VolkerFitzpatrick have joined the handful of contractors to be BIM2 verified ahead of the Government’s 4 April public sector project compliance deadline.

Business standards company BSI accredited the firms using its recently launched BIM scheme for PAS 1192-2 information management on construction projects.

The trio join BAM and Skanska, which were approved four months ago by BSI.

Mace, Interserve, Shepherd Engineering Services and regional contractor Howard Russell are among the only other big names to announce they have been BIM 2 certificated.

The BSI standard sets out how to share information on BIM projects and lists the requirements for Design and Construction BIM Level 2.

It makes recommendations for the adoption of industry conventions, challenges project complacency and promotes consistency and transparency of work processes between parties.

Neil Thompson, Principal BIM Integrator at Balfour Beatty, said: “This certification gives assurance to our customers that we utilise BIM to handle and manage information with the upmost degree of care and accuracy and to the highest standard, throughout project delivery.”

“We’re delighted to be among a handful of companies to be certified by the British Standards Institution to deliver construction projects at BIM Level 2 for Design & Construction,” said Stephen Smith, Virtual Project Delivery Operations Lead for Bechtel’s global infrastructure business.

“Bechtel is pioneering the use of new technology and innovation within the construction industry and our certification provides our customers and supply chain with the assurance that we have the capability to deliver projects using BIM ahead of new government legislation.”

Rob Dingwall, Head of Planning and Design, VolkerFitzpatrick added: “VolkerFitzpatrick were pleased to collaborate closely with BSI to achieve our Level 2 certification for Design & Construction and to be at the very forefront of BIM in the UK. As a world class contractor, we wanted to partner with a world class standards organization. We found the experience very thorough but practical and we’d recommend working with BSI for certification.”
