Esh Border Construction is closing its Carlisle joinery business as it restructures operations in the North West.

The company is consolidating its two offices in Cumbria into a single operation in Penrith.

The move will lead to redundancies and employees are currently engaged in a consultation exercise which will be completed by May.

The offices were acquired by Esh when it bought Border Construction Ltd in 2014.

Esh said: “The decision to relocate offices follows a comprehensive review of the business and will provide a solid base for business growth.

“Within the announced change of offices, the company has also confirmed that the Carlisle-based joinery workshop, Border Joinery, will close.”

Simon Phillips, Regional Managing Director of Esh Border Construction, said: “Whilst we are very conscious about how any change impacts our team, we believe that creating a single office is an important and natural step to take, providing us with the right platform for further growth.

“We have also made the decision to close Border Joinery.

“This follows two years where we have made investments in equipment, a dedicated website and vehicles but unfortunately have not been able to turn this business into a profitable operation; we are all deeply saddened to have to close the joinery business.

“While impacting the team, these changes are a clear demonstration of the ongoing support and commitment from the company to Esh Border Construction and the very important market of Cumbria and the wider North West region.

“The new office will provide an improved working environment and better links to the market, reinforcing the future of the business as we look towards fresh challenges and continue to underline our commitment to the North West.

“The organisational changes are expected to be complete by May. Anyone affected by these changes will receive our full support and we would like to thank all of our employees for their contribution to the Esh Group.”
