Bidding has got underway for the first key projects on the £1.6bn planned education and cultural quarter in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The two key development sites around the London Stadium known as UCL East and the Stratford Waterfront will be home to an array of landmark university, museum and performance buildings.

The Mayor of London yesterday granted outline planning permission for the University College London East development site as five contractors were called up to submit bids for the first major building project in phase 1 of the new campus in East London.

At the same time bids are being invited for site enabling works at the adjacent Stratford Waterfront site. This will ultimately be home to 600 flats, the Victoria and Albert East Museum, The London School of Fashion and a dance theatre for Sadler’s Wells.

Construction of Phase 1 of UCL East will start in 2019, and will consist of over 50,000 sq m of development across two buildings together costing over £200m to build.

Tender documents have gone out to five firms: Bouygues, Laing O’Rourke, Lendlease, Mace and Sir Robert McAlpine for Marshgate 1, the largest building in Phase 1 of UCL’s new campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

A preferred contractor will be appointed under a pre-construction services agreement this summer with construction of Marshgate 1 expected to start in late spring of 2019.

The second building complex is Pool Street West. It will feature a range of uses, including student accommodation, academic, retail, community and engagement uses.

Designed by architecture practice Stanton Williams, Marshgate 1 will be a new 35,000m2 research, innovation and teaching building.

At the nearby Stratford Waterfront site, The London Legacy Development Corporation is also now calling up firms to bid for enabling works worth around £6m.

This will pave the way for the extensive development with around 600 flats on the north of the site and a more compact union of buildings at the southern end for the London College of Fashion, Victoria and Albert East Museum, aand a new dance theatre for Sadler’s Wells

The Stratford Waterfront planning application is due to be submitted in autumn 2018 with the first buildings scheduled for opening in late summer 2022.

Prequalification has now started with five firms due to be shortlisted to tender for site enabling works in June.
