Specialist roofing contractor Donaldson & McConnell has fallen into administration with the loss of 102 jobs just months after embarking on an expansion programme.

Administrator KPMG has let the majority of the firm’s 114 staff go and is hoping to sell parts of the business and complete a number of contracts.

The firm opened a fourth branch near Canterbury six months ago and was planning another in Manchester before its failure.

Donaldson & McConnell has branches in Bo’ness Scotland, Northern Ireland and the West Midlands specialising in the design and installation of timber and glulam roofs.

The firm has worked with a host of main contractors and housebuilders including Morgan Ashurst, Laing O’Rourke, Kier, Sir Robert McAlpine, Taylor Wimpey, Barratt and Bovis Homes.

Blair Nimmo, head of restructuring forKPMG in Scotland, said: “In common with many companies that supply the construction sector, Donaldson & McConnell has experienced very challenging conditions in recent times, with the reduction in construction activity reducing demand for the Groups products.

“The directors have made considerable efforts to reduce the cost base, but unfortunately cost cutting measures were insufficient to stem trading losses and cashflow pressures.

“We have started to assess the Group’s customer contracts with the intention of completing certain works and seeking offers for some of the Groups contracts.

“We have retained 12 employees to assist with this process.

“Regrettably, we have had to make 102 employees redundant with immediate effect. We are working with government agencies to ensure all employee issues are dealt with.”
