Betting Spy: Wide open for Westwood

Lee Westwood must look in the mirror every morning and face his greatest fear – turning into Colin Montgomerie.

I’m not talking about developing that sinister smile and weird patronising voice.

The real worry for Westwood is taking over Monty’s mantle as the greatest domestic golfer never to win a major.

So let’s hope the horror of a Monty-morphosis can be put to rest once and for all at Royal St George’s this week where Westwood looks a cracking bet at 11/1 to triumph.

We’ll hedge our bets a bit with an each way punt because Paddy Power is paying a quarter the odds for the first seven places which is too generous to ignore given Westwood’s great open record after coming third and second in the last two years.

But he looks a great price to lift the Claret Jug so let’s have a look round for a bit of value to fill the places.

First up is the substantial shape of Angel Cabrera – a man who certainly won’t be blown away if it gets windy down by the Kent coast.

The big Argentine is a throwback to the days before players’ gyms and mind coaches.

He’s certainly not the fittest on the tour but saves his best performances for the majors and put in a good turn at the Scottish Open so an each way interest at 66/1 appeals.

Finally – and it’s rather satisfying to talk of it as a footnote – we have the American challenge.

We have the Open and they need to put US in front of theirs and it’s great to see our players now holding the bragging rights on the course as well.

But we can still make a few bob out of the Yanks and I like the look of Steve Stricker to be highest placed US player at 8/1.

He’s in red hot form Stateside while his rivals read like a litany of faded stars, unknowns and golfers who hate the thought of blustery Britain and its uneven seaside bounces.

Those three should give us a decent run so let’s settle back and enjoy a four day golf-fest which will hopefully see Lee Westwood grab the prize his game deserves.
