Pay row hits Olympic Village site

Two agency workers have launched an industrial tribunal claim for allegedly unpaid wages at the Olympic Village site.

The pair are being backed by construction union Ucatt who have unsuccessfully tried to get main contractor Lend Lease to cover the workers’ cash.

The workers were engaged by installation subcontractor James Varney (JPV Europe) to work as window fixers for facade supplier Parry Bowen on the Olympic Village.

The work finished at the end of July and the Eastern European workers claim they are still owed £2,500.

Lend Lease has told Ucatt the dispute is a matter for the subcontractors and workers to sort out and the union is now going to an employment tribunal.

Jerry Swain, Regional Secretary of Ucatt’s London and South East Region, said: “The workers who actually made the job happen could get nothing.

“This is public money and it must go to the workers.”

An ODA spokesperson said: “The Village construction manager Lend Lease has worked actively to encourage a resolution to this issue.

“This is ultimately a dispute between the operatives concerned and their employer – however, all parties are keen to ensure workers on the Athletes Village are fairly treated, and Lend Lease will continue to engage with all sides to ensure that any legitimate claims are resolved.”
